It was all-change at the top of the world rankings yet again, as Justin Rose reclaimed the number one spot after winning the Turkish Airlines Open. The Englishman beat China’s Li Haotong in a playoff after both players finished on 17-under-par.

For Li, it was certainly a story of what could have been after a series of near-misses down the final stretch. To compound his misery further, Li had a makeable putt on the first playoff hole to claim victory, only to race his first attempt a few feet past before failing to hole the one coming back. A three-putt for Li and a second consecutive Turkish Airlines Open victory for Rose, securing his place back at the summit of the world rankings.

Time is precious

The proposed changes to the Rules of Golf are less than two months away, so we thought we'd look at one introduction which is designed to keep your round moving at a good pace...no more five hour rounds!

Under the current Rules of Golf (27.1c), a ball is deemed lost if it has not been found or identified by the player within five minutes of beginning their search. However, under the proposed changes (18.2a), a ball is deemed lost if it is not found within three minutes - that's a 40% reduction in time allowed to search for a lost ball.

Remember - if your ball strays offline or there is a good chance that you'll have trouble finding it, hit a provisional ball to maintain your group's speed of play and avoid the embarrassment of walking back to the ground behind to replay your shot.

Sway or coil?

Golf is very much a game of the mind. Everyone knows that trying to hit the ball really hard isn't going to lead to long-term success, yet when we feel the wind blowing into our face or see one of our playing partners hit one miles down the fairway, we give ours that extra little bit to try and find those all-important few yards. How often do this result in a good shot?

One of the reasons we fail to connect properly with the ball in these scenarios is because we 'sway' as opposed to 'coil' during the backswing. A swaying motion - as shown on the right - means you not only lose a consistent contact with the ball, but also any power built up during the backswing.

Instead, you should try to coil - as shown on the left - which happens when you achieve maximum shoulder rotation and minimal hip rotation in your swing. This results in more width on your backswing, as well as a much more athletic movement through the ball.
